911 Alternatives - Reducing White Reactivity

With Susan Kaplan and Anita Foxworth

Wednesday, July 15th 4:00 pm–6:00 pm MDT

  • What does it mean for you to be safe?
  • In what ways do you understand the costs of some feeling safe and others not being safe?
  • Are you confused on what it means to defund the police?
  • What questions do you hold about what has happened in the last month?

What happens when we call the police as white people? What happens when we call the police as BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color)? These are often extremely different experiences that lead to feeling safe for some, while others experience fear to death.

Come join our conversation about “the safety net of traditional police departments”. We will explore the Domination Cultural habit of power over when calling the police when there is no real threat but can actually escalate into a life crisis. The recent examples of a family playing Mexican music or the woman walking her dog are serious insights into how rapidly events can spiral out of control.

We will talk about what needs and beliefs may be motivating this reactivity of white people when they automatically call the police. We will also explore some new strategies and how to talk to other white people about the inherent dangers inherent of 911 calls. You will be invited to explore your own needs and beliefs through our time together using a Nonviolent Communication approach.
